홍동식 교수는 디자인 교육뿐만 아니라 그래픽 디자인 분야에서도 활발히 활동하고 있다. 경북대학교에서 시각 커뮤니케이션 디자인 학사 학위를 취득한 후 미국 샌프란시스코에 있는 Academy of Art University에서 그래픽 디자인 석사 학위를 취득했다. 그 후 경북대학교에서 박사과정을 마쳤습니다. 한국에 돌아온 이후 디자인 교육뿐만 아니라 디자인 활동에도 깊이 관여해 왔으며, 20여년 동안 교육자이자 디자인 커리어 멘토로 활동하고 있다. 현재 부경대학교 시각디자인학과에 재직중이며 그래픽 디자이너 및 교육자로 활동하고 있다. 그는 현재 다양한 디자인 및 출판 프로젝트에 참여하고 있습니다. 그래픽 디자인과 현대미술의 경계를 넘나드는 실험적인 작품들을 선보이며 포스터 제작을 통한 다양한 전시를 펼치고 있다. 포스터 작품은 NY ADC, Graphis, Eco-Plagat Poster Biennale 등 다양한 유수의 세계포스터 비엔날레에서 수상했다. 그의 포스터 중 하나는 암스테르담 스테드릭 근대 미술관이 소장하고 있으며 최근에는 유네스코 세계기록유산인 "조선 통신사"의 상징물 디자인했다. 예술과 디자인의 경계에서 고민하며 <포스터에는 메시지가 있다>는 단순한 진리를 통한 작품 활동을 펼치고 있다.

Dr. Dongsik Hong has actively devoted himself to the field of graphic design as well as design education. After earning BFA in Visual Communication Design at Kyungpook National University, he proceeded to MFA in Graphic Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, U.S.A.; later on, he completed the PH.D requirements at Kyungpook National University. Since he came back to Korea, he has been deeply involved in the design industry as well as design education, he has been a motivating educator and career mentor over 21 years. He is currently hired by Pukyong National University as a professor, continuing his career as a graphic designer and educator in the Department of Visual Communications Design. He is currently involved in various design and publishing projects. He has held a variety of exhibitions, where he has introduced experimental works crossing over the boundaries of Graphic Design and contemporary art. He has been speaking out as a designer and educator. His works have been awarded by NYADC, Graphis, Eco-Plagat Poster Biennale, etc.; one of his posters has been held by The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and most recently he designed the symbol of "Joseon Tongsinsa on Messenger", a Memory of World UNESCO.
